There may come a point in your life where you need to do a major downsizing or even a complete disposal of your current estate. If you are moving to a distant location it may be cheaper and easier to sell most of your household goods than pay to have them shipped. Or one day you may look around and just decide you have too much “stuff.”
There are several approaches to getting rid of “stuff:”
Garage sale: This is a sale held by the owner at the house. It is a lot of work and usually the least effective and the least profitable.
Consignment: Most consignment shops are very selective about what they take so unless you have very unusual or highly desirable items this is probably not a good choice for disposing of most household goods.
Auction: On-site auctions are usually reserved for large estates, business or farms. There are auction houses who will take things for sale but commissions are usually high and there is no guarantee of a fair price. Some areas offer on-line auctions through specialized dealers.
Estate sale: This is one of the best methods of selling household goods if everything in the house is being sold. A professional estate sale company will do all of the set up, conduct the sale, collect sales taxes if required and divide the receipts with you at a predetermined split rate.
Donations: Charities depend on donations to support their work. Even after and estate sale there will be some things left over and these make ideal donations.
